This project widens and resurfaces 5.4 miles of SH-63 starting at US-271 in Talihina, OK. The existing SH-63 is a 22ft wide rural collector with no paved shoulders. With the exception of realignment at the intersection with US-271, improvements include the following:
- Widening the lanes to 24ft
- Constructing 8ft shoulders
- Mill and overlay the existing pavement section
Because the construction is categorized as 3R, the project scope includes reviewing the horizontal and vertical alignments to ensure that the geometrics are acceptable under 3R criteria.
An alignment study completed in November, 2011 evaluated three alternatives: one alternative involved constructing an offset alignment, while the remaining two alternatives involved realigning SH-63 where span bridges were to be reconstructed.
It was subsequently determined that the highway would remain on the existing alignment except at the intersection with US-271. The span bridges at Buzzard and Birney Creeks were designed as rehabilitation projects and were constructed separately.
