The purpose of this project was to rehabilitate Bridge #11 over Tar Creek. Located in a Superfund site, the bridge experiences heavy truck traffic every day as trucks haul out chat from the original lead mines. The superstructure and deck had deteriorated to a point where extensive repairs were necessary to maintain this heavy truck traffic. In addition, several of the steel beams were severely corroded with extensive section loss. However, the substructure was still in good condition. Using the existing substructure to hold a new superstructure allowed for standard PC beams to be constructed. The approach roadway was also removed and rebuilt to allow for smooth transitions onto the new bridge and deck.
Rehabilitating rather than replacing this bridge saved money and avoided most of the environmental issues by eliminating a work road requirement.
